MOMO CHALLENGE! CANNOT UNSEE!
Totally not nightmare inducing at all, right? The whole challenge thing’s fake apparently but that hasn’t stopped some parents and kids from taking it too seriously

It’s not new, it was going around on whatsapp in some countries last year. I think Brazil was one of those countries.

I received this text from my child’s school today.
D ear ........ Elementary Parents, Our administrative team is aware of a digital danger that is targeting children called Momo. This danger has infiltrated even popular children YouTube videos. It’s all stupid really, the article perfectly sums it up
“All of these challenges and trends follow the same formula: A local news station runs a piece overstating a dangerous teen trend. Concerned parents flock to social media to spread the word. Actual teenagers and anyone else who lives their life Extremely Online mock them for their naïveté. Brands and influencers hop on the trend , parodying it and exploiting it for their own gain. And trolls take advantage of those who believe it’s real, often by creating and posting content that seemingly confirms parents’ worst fears . SNL brilliantly parodied this cycle in 2010. Since then, it has only gotten worse.”

They can’t keep up at this rate with a new “ challenge” popping up every week. I remember when Slenderman was talked about for years and not forgotten in a month.

My seven years old knows nothing about it. I was a child in the eighties and remember people talking about how Dungeon and Dragons was dangerous.

(Dramatic broadcasting school baritone) They’re called fake teen trend scares - and one might be getting overhyped on your local news... right now. We’ll have the details coming up . But first, would you like some avocado on your toast? A local food truck might... just have you covered.

I put a high blame on local news for most paranoia in the US.
Its like the constant crime stories. parents”oh my god theres a muggng every night downtown/mall/ ”
(spends 3 minutes on google)
Uh back in the sixties, car theft, muggings were all much higher”

Seriously, fuck you.
There’s no need for this kinda shit here, so you should put in an “after the jump” and also, as previously stated, fuck right the hell off.

A friend who never shares things posted the warning about this on Facebook within the last couple days. I commented something like “ I think people sometimes forget how these things go viral”.
I didn’t bother clicking the link to read about whatever the challenge was. It just seemed ignorant to share it. IMO parents should already be paying some attention to what their kids are doing online, and I don’t think contributing to the distribution of panic and pointing more attention towards destructive media is a worthwhile endeavour.

You can sympathize though, they need content to fill airtime and only have a couple topics to choose from. It’s either this, sports, snow, a house fire, a local school craft project, or some city official caught on camera taking an extra 2 minutes of lunch break.

10/10 would date her :P
After the first time I saw it and I shocked me I think it just looks funny. I just laugh because it looks like a zany version of the crazy girlfriend meme .
